Replaced crankset with 53/39 SRAM GXP one I had spare Unfortunately for this project we are going to have to stick with the stock Fulcrum Racing 900 Wheels. Wheel upgrades certainly are worth it if you have the money to spend and since there are other places that are even more impactful, and some things like a helmet that we simply cant do without, we are going to toe the start line this summer with the Fulcrum Racing 900s. This still leaves us with $1,050 to spend and one of the best places to start is what is going to be mounted to those rims. All rights reserved. It made me panic a bit at first until I settled down and realized they're just different horses. The idea was to create a road bike as light as top mass-production carbon road bikes, but with a style and uniqueness that big bike companies cant really match at 1.5x the price. I would wager this frame is a similar weight. Ive also dented an Allez sprint frame in the past. Sorry reviving the thread. That said, I wouldnt do it. Does that saddle binder rope thingy look sketchy to anybody else? That break will most likely require more force than the aluminum dent. I dont race (apart from again myself for pbs) and live in a flat area where the hills are short and sharp ramps for a few minutes, no long climbs but road conditions are generally very poor, I just like to get out for the fast club ride on the weekend that is 1.5 to 2 hours to the caf and the same back, 50-100km with a couple of gran fondos a year. Itll hurt, and you wont win the race, but it can be done. Also my saddle is prone to creaking due to dirt. Emonda ALR 54cm frameset @ just over 1200g. Give them a shout out. But $10K for the top line spec is a killer deal, even if I dont want one. As long as I went fast on it, it was happy. Is it time to ditch the final day procession? For our purposes here I am going to prioritize the helmets main function, protecting my head. With the budget in mind, Im going to pick the fourth safest road helmet according to Virginia Techs safety testing. With a bigger budget there are some great options that are safe and extremely aero. For now I am going to prioritize trying to limit concussions rather than saving a couple watts.. At $7500, the Level 2 Anthem build is still claimed under 6.8kg/15lb, again with SRAM Force. I think I saw 2kg quoted for the new Emonda ALR (frame and forks). Its a similar mix of aero and practicality at the seatpost. They say they went full tilt weight weenie here to craft a featherweight battle-axe created to smash all carbon bikes. I remember when I took delivery of my Seven. Modern race bikes are all beginning to converge on a similar look, namely truncated airfoil tube profiles, dropped seatstays and an aero cockpit. It's only been two weeks since I sold my CAAD7 and this thread is already making me miss it. Its a highly versatile machine that happily fits the bill as anything from an everyday workhorse to a full-bore racer. or 8? This gets us a great base to start from and at $1,950 that leaves us with $1,050 to complete the rest of our race set up. My CAAD12 is 5 years old and has never creaked a bit. Thousands of miles and flawless. Love it. Its hard not to spot the similarity with the latest SuperSix Evo, which Cannondale released a matter of weeks before launching this bike. Copyright 2022 Bikerumor, All Rights Reserved. By chance: can anyone give a hint on how to avoid dirt sneaking between rails and the clamp of the seatpost? I love steel forks but in certain contexts. If I put these comments on my built it would be under 12 lbs. I have 2 Darimo post with the Dyneema loops. Too low for my old man back. I saw one of these in person some time ago; really nice looking frame. But the Anthem SL-AF really starts shedding grams left & right with an exotic build Cane Creek eeBrakes handle stopping, and Stages-equipped power meter eeWings cranks put the power down. I like the idea of something that is just fun and you can throw around corners, something that can be thrown in the boot (trunk for most of you) and just go out and ride instead of worrying how fragile it is, and trying to keep up with everyone elses exotic standards. You can liive on a 50-33, even in Colorado. That race heritage has remained in place ever since. - Michelin Power Competition tyres with latex tubes are nice alternative to Contis (which are also great). Wheels are often seen as one of the first places riders want to upgrade on the bike. There are a ton of great reasons for this, you can often safe a pound of weight. I certainly dont fall into the weight weenie camp but when you are talking about saving a full pound or 453.3g, that is certainly somewhere to pay attention. There are also some considerable aero benefits to be had. Stock rims are low profile, often have round spokes, and leave plenty of room to be improved.. The frame has been hanging from the rafters ever since. +1 BMANX. [.] Most beautiful (if thats all that matters is the 7.) I dont need a wind-tunnel to tell me these wheels are right up there among the best Ive tested in terms of how well they slice through the air, accelerating and carrying speed with reassuring ease and looking stylish too. Its Letchworth State park near Rochester, NY. Add the cable guide, give it a double and call it a day! To be honest, $10,000 for the weight weenie Affinity Anthem SL-AF quickly starts to look like a good deal when you break down the individual components. Now that we have a fully ridable bike, a helmet, clothing, shoes, and pedals, it leaves $322 left so that we can make the set up faster, and maybe a little for style as well. It had one little dent in the NDS chainstay (cosmetic only). Why not recycle a high-end classic steel bicycle? Known mostly for their urban fixed gear Lo Pro & other track bike creations, Brooklyn, NYs Affinity Cycles is branching out onto the road with the new stainless steel Anthem road bike. This website uses cookies to help us give you the best experience when you visit our website. But aluminum will dent while carbon will break. You like steel, fine but assume it and go with steel for most components. One of the first things I am going to upgrade on my new bike is going to be the tires. The CAAD13 comes with Vittoria Zaffrino Pro Slicks in 25mm. Our friends at Bicyclerollingresistance.com list that stock tire at 15.4w loss at 100psi, vs just 8.3w with the GP5000 TL in 25mm. The beauty about tires is you get to multiply the gains by two which brings the tire upgrade to an astounding 14.2w! I hesitate to open this can of worms, but I wouldnt buy a new rim brake frame either. Grinding by at 60 rpm uphill hurts, and it isnt fun, in the I dont want to do this anymore sense. But the builds do seem like a good value. Dont usually see it that low. That lower crown race/fork gap is tough too ignore given the price point. While $3,000 USD might be less expensive that some of the top end frames, with a lot of really great product out there we are going to see how we can get a race day set up for under $3,000 USD. Exploring the world of marginal gains we think we can get podium contending bike and gear set up. For the purposes of this post all of the selections will be based around the local road racing scene here in Indianapolis where we are headquartered. That means flat criteriums, lots of flat criteriums and not much else. We have a few hilly road races with the climbs being 1.2mi/2km and 270ft/82m. Like I said, flat and fast is the focus the focus here. Not unavoidable. Just built up a CAAD13, found the frame new on ebay. The all-conquering Saeco-Cannondale squad and its flamboyant leader, Mario Cipollini, helped make these bikes iconic. My aluminum Allez Sprint is not comparable to my aluminum Trek Roscoe (MTB) just because theyre both the same material. You mentioned pinch flats talking about the Pista pump, so isnt it worth it during a race to not have that worry by going tubeless? About 10 years ago I had the opportunity to try out a bar tape that was more expensive than any other I had ridden and boasted a great grip. It changed what I thought was ok to wrap my bars with. I really loved the feel of the tape but it had one really major problem for spending so much on tape, it wore out really quickly. Then I started racing more and really didnt want to spend a lot of money on bar tape that would end up sliding on the pavement only to need to be replaced, and if I was lucky enough to make it through a month or two without an accident it would be worn anyway.. - 56mm deep, 21.6 internal width, Light Bicycle branded carbon wheels which I built up myself (no sense damaging expensive branded wheels when racing) Black on black on black, just the way I like it! Ive been eyeballing a caad 13 frameset. That's the CAAD7 Optimo right? I generally agree with this article as you have chosen some great stuff if you had to buy new. The geometry and riding position also mimic the SuperSix Evo, to maintain the racy feel the CAAD is known for. Im not certain that aluminum is more rugged that carbon. Since this is all about budget, why wouldnt you save money (~$30) by buying the standard GP5000 rather than the TL? It makes more sense to have a heavier frame and lighter components than the opposite. I'd like to have one that will fit an honest 28. BWR, CA: An unforgiving race that gave back. That max rider weight of 90kg gives me pause. Im putting back together an old frame that was a half road half tri frankenbike a few years ago now. Especially if you have some bibs, helmet and jersey already, getting a good bike fit that lets you race and train without injury, and maintain an optimal position for aerodynamics, power and handling, will bring more benefits than a skinsuit, or new bar tape. Affinity calls this their Level 3 complete build for the Anthem, with a claimed weight for a medium frame of 6.58kg, just 14.5lb. One race in my second season of racing, I had upgraded out of the beginner category and was doing my first crit that was longer than 30 minutes. I am a big sweater so not bringing water for a 50 minute race is not an option for me especially considering that day was 90+ degrees. About 90 seconds into the race, I hit a man hole cover and popped my only water bottle out of its cage. Every lap for the rest of the race I saw that bottle sitting in the gutter and I was desperate for a drink.. I own a XCR frame and the frame with headset, der hanger and seatpost bolt is 1658g. This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. Cory Benson is the EU Tech Editor of Bikerumor.com. Cannondales latest CAAD upholds the brands mantra that aluminium bikes are a truly viable alternative to carbon fibre. Both framesets and complete bike builds are available in June 2020. I know I might have forgotten sales tax and went over the budget by $3 but we can say I sold my take off tires to get back under the budget. All in for less than $3k we came up with what I think is going to be a really great race set up. There are a ton of different ways to go with this and we would love to hear what you would change, what did we miss and, any other bike build articles you would like to see in the future. Leave your comments and suggestions below! Spanish carbon specialist Darimo lends their 65g T1 Loop seatpost, 118g bar, 78g stem & 4g seatpost clamp. I just had mine installed by local mechanic and the axle is too short. I think this answers your question: Brooklyn, NY. If you want that kind of tech setup, why not buy used? Its hard to argue with a Chris King ceramic bottom bracket or SRAM Red eTap AXS; Affinity takes advantage of its rarer rim-brake version, with the option for 1x (Garbaruk 50T chainring) or 2x setups. I own a 54cm XCR frame made by Cicli il Massimo, with seat post bolt and rear derailleur hanger and headset (FSA Orbit) it is 1658 grams. He has done quite a few custom bikes for them. Fun article, and good on you to include the other gear and clotung, besides just the bike. The new Hollowgram Knot 45 wheelset from Cannondales in-house brand are the very same wheels fitted to the top-end SuperSix Evo models (bikes that cost twice as much), and they are superb. You can see some of his work on their Instagram page. But it starts delivers most of the ultralight components from Darimo, Extralite & Gelu, plus the eeBrakes & eeWings cranks, Chris King ceramic BB, and the Affinity SL-AF carbon wheels with Vittoria Corsa tires. So your frame has negative mass? There is, of course, some additional peace of mind brought by the extra robustness of a metal frame over carbon, should you be fearful of crashing at some point, but mostly it means you can have top-drawer components such as the Sram Force eTap AXS wireless shifting and top-of-the-range carbon wheels without an eye-watering overall price. Ive done thousands of miles in and around Brooklyn. SILCA re-entered the chain lube market after years of development with Super Secret Chain Lube. It was tested by Zero Friction Cycling to be the best emulsifying wax lube on the market at the time. It has only been matched by one other that has created something as close as possible to Super Secret but charge 50% more.. Looking at all these CAAD photos really makes me pine for my old CAAD10. There appears to be plenty of room for a little bit wider certainly up to 32mm if you so desire, which means theres potentially some additional versatility to be unlocked with a simple switch of rubber. But regardless, it shows that the best aluminium bikes (of which this is undeniably one) are a far cry from the harsh, filling-rattling beasts theyre often believed to be. Can confirm, my CAAD12 from 2016 is also free of creaks by now, at least what concerns the BB. How did u fit sram red bb30 crank into bb30A? Instead, it has continued to invest in and develop its alloy line-up, consistently updating the design and materials required to keep these bikes on pace with whats expected of a race bike. Out of interest, what sort of weight are folks getting their (disc brake) performance models too, at least without spending megabucks or going full weight-weenie? The entire frame gets a sandblasted finish with low-key polished Affinity graphics. We focussed on elements that really improve the ride, namely drag reduction, comfort and wide-ranging capability, while not increasing the weight.. As for your post, my frame is 1 pound lighter than this one at 1950g. Or, to look at it another way, you could still run wide tyres with full mudguards, as the CAAD13 also has all the necessary mounting points. About the hilliest thing around is like route 9 and thats pretty doable on a 50-33. Cory has been writing about mountain bikes, enduro, cyclocross, all-road, gravel bikes & bikepacking on and off for over 25 years, since before several of these even had names in our industry. The result is a completely new look for the CAAD13 and a big departure from the more traditional, predominantly round tube shapes. Cannondale, unlike many brands, has not relegated aluminium bikes to the bottom of the heap as cheaper, entry-level alternatives to carbon. To pair with these ultra fast tires, I am going to run our own Latex Inner Tubes. When compared to the butyl tubes that the bike comes with, they can save 2-5w/wheel. Call it 6w on the conservative side and we just saved 20w for a total of $172! I like the build and the components they have selected. - thread together bottom bracket to fix the BB30 creaking (ZTTO brand from Ali Express). You see it on a lot of our seat packs, so Im certainly going to make sure that I get a shoe with BOA dials. The Specialized Torch is a perfect option for what I am looking for. It is light on the wallet, has a BOA dial for a secure fit that is easy to adjust, and comes in all white to add a little contrast to the black frame. I bought a used, completely stock standard 2014 Cannondale CAAD10 (rim brake) with 10 speed Shimano 105 groupset back in 2019 (back when used bikes were still cheap!) Disagree. I have an steel English build with heavier components and my build is lighter at half the cost. I have seen Robs work and it is amazing. Its a lot stiffer than my Argon 18 nitrogen was, but feels REALLY fast. Its spot in the garage has been taken by a Time VXS. Once the geometry is published, Id very seriously consider getting one. To your point about alu frames being less fragile, while I cant speak for carbon frames my CAAD12 has picked up a number of dents over the years and I honestly have no idea where they come from. The CAAD13 is close to half the cost of the upper end of the carbon spectrum (from Cannondale or many other brands) but Id say youre getting maybe as much as 90% of the performance. This is the SILCA blog so you probably are already aware how big of a deal tire pressure can be. Knowing that I am trying to save every watt possible on a budget, I am going with the Pista Plus Pump to ensure that the pressure I am running is dialed. We recently had a shop that was convinced our pump was reading incorrectly because a batch of pumps they had in the shop were all reading 7-10 psi higher than a Pista Plus they had in stock. We were curious and brought our lab grade gauge to check and before we compare this to some tire pressure gauge you can get on Amazon for $12, this one costs well over double our most expensive pump. We got there and found that our pump was indeed not perfect, but well within the 2% accuracy we expect. It was reading 81psi where the gauge read 82. The other pumps were just 6-9 psi high!. The MTB is going to be vastly more durable (and thus heavier) than the road bike. Aero helmets can be a big improvement on overall efficiency. The tricky piece about helmets is that they dont perform the same on everybody. What might be the fastest option on the market for me, might be like a parachute for you. There are some that are generally fast, but there are certainly riders that are exceptions to that. I would agree that the bike feels comfier than its predecessor, but twice as much? It kinda all comes down to the bike. If it were possible to ride the CAAD13 blindfolded (we dont recommend it) Id wager few people would notice immediately that they were riding an aluminium bike. Copyright Diamond Publishing 2022. Cannondales engineers have delivered a modern masterpiece in terms of material manipulation with the CAAD13, using what it calls SmartForm. Tour de France Femmes 2022: Everything you need to know, Annemiek van Vleuten hit 95.4kmh on La Super Planche des Belles Filles stage, Gallery: Annemiek van Vleuten wins Stage 8 and first ever Tour de France Femmes maillot jaune, Hollowgram Knot 45 Carbon,Vittoria Rubino Pro 28mm tyres. New for 2020 comes the 13th generation of CAAD, which promises to prove that aluminium neednt play second fiddle to the black stuff when it comes to speed, weight and comfort. This choice is a very personal one as every clothing item fits each person a little different. I have used these skinsuits in the past and find them to fit me well and be comfortable. I kept the mavic C40s, ultegra Di2, zipp bars/stem from the old bike. A 50-33 is plenty adequate for the like 3 mild grades they call hills. for $550 AUD ($385 USD). The Knot 27 post is a truncated airfoil profile, like many of the frame tubes, but Cannondale suggests it is extremely compliant even more so, it claims, than the super-skinny 25.4mm Save carbon post used previously. Worth the conversation for sure another note is that the bike also accepts 2x. There are so many great bikes out on the market right now. Carbon, Aluminum, Ti, Steel, and even a few Magnesium frames still floating around. With our budget in mind, this is going to be the biggest expense so I still need to leave plenty of room for upgrades and to complete the set up. The best bike for your budget is great, but you still need pedals, shoes, clothing, a helmet, etc. With that in mind I am going to go with what I think is the best budget race bike on the market today, the CAAD13., To really stir up some arguments this bike is available in rim and disc brake configurations, and I am buying the rim brake version #savetherimbrake. In reality I am a huge fan of disc brakes but with a really tight budget, I would rather spend the extra $350 on some other items rather than disc brakes. I love the stopping power and reliable performance but for flat racing, I think there are better places to put the money. We cant go without touching on the paint scheme which we have argued in the past is the number one reason to buy a bike. I am a sucker for a black bike with red accents so we are going to follow that theme throughout.. That gelu saddle is really an interesting design ! ordinarily, my eyes glaze over at super light builds. The only difference between the old bike and this one is the frameset, and the new one is 200g heavier, aero difference seems negligible at best. I've owned the following Cannondale road frames: Agreed with others. I doubt this frame is 1950. Its trainer worthy, but a ways from roadworthy yet! All it is really lacking is the Red AXS group & power meter of the $10,000 bike, making this probably the best weight weenie value out of the bunch! A neat feature of the bar/stem is that, despite having the looks and aero benefits of a one-piece design, it is in fact separate parts, allowing individual components to be swapped easily and offering 8 of bar rotation to fine-tune riding position. Bonus- they used the Campy standard internal headsets which means you have that little extra bit of Campy bling on a full build, or a reminder that Campy exists on a Shimano/SRAM build. I would have thought you would have gone for an extra, race day chain, and waxing? As we sit here in January of 2022, supply shortages are still a very real thing. Since a blog post that starts and ends with Id buy what is available, we are going to pretend we are back in 2019 and bikes, accessories, etc are all available in plenty. This new stainless steel Affinity Anthem SL-AF road bike just goes to show that rim brakes arent dead, and that steel can give carbon a run for its money as a platform for killer weight weenie builds. so far its been great. Classic details include simple things like a rim brakes, QR drops with 100/130mm hub spacing, replaceable derailleur hanger, 68mm wide BB, and a 27.2mm seatpost. . Buy the Cannondale Caad13 Disc from Tredz for 4,799.99. https://affinitycycles.com/shop/anthem-frameset. Cant call it superlight build without including the frame weight! Both for the speed from the fast chain, and saving money and time on wear and cleaning? Please note, comments must be approved before they are published. The cockpit is directly descended from the full-aero line of Knot products Cannondale developed for its wind-cheating SystemSix race bike. By continuing to use this website, you consent to our use of these cookies. The intricately formed aero tubeset, seatpost and cockpit combined achieve a 30% reduction in drag compared to the previous model, according to Cannondale. Does anyonr know if the tire clearance got better with the later models? With $686 left to spend it means I am going to need to start making some selective choices to make sure I get all the things I need on a bike. What good is a weight-weenie bike that doesnt have enough gears to go uphill? A technical off-road rider at heart since the 1990s, Corys cycling has evolved to cover everything from the wide range of riding aero road bikes on dirt roads to thrashing enduro bikes in the European bikeparks & trail centers, with plenty of XC, CX & gravel in between. It was a grail bike for me. Plus there are a pair of 10g carbon bottle cages that didnt make the photoshoot. A ruby red Saeco team with BB30 and the rarer full carbon SI fork is ridiculous - that fork is lighter and stiffer than the 10 fork and it's like 7 years older? I spent the extra budget on: Been using it without a problem, amazing quality from Darimo on this front. But modern features make the bike, like the machined 44mm headtube for a 1.5 tapered steerer, that threaded bottom bracket is actually a T47, modular internal cable routing with removable plates to work with mechanical or electronic drivetrains, plus room for 28mm tires even inside the rim brakes. Not only is Super Secret Chain Lube so fast, but the cleanliness is incredible. The wax repels dirt and means you dont get oils and grease on your hands if you do have a mechanical. It also will make your chain las longer which means your cassette and chainrings last longer as well and saves you money in the long run. I have done WW bikes under 14lbs and to me there is not a ton of difference. In general, carbon frames are actually gonna be stronger than aluminum in the engineering sense of stress vs strain. Rob does amazing work as do these guys. Its a remarkable design, been rock solid! Anyone who followed cycling in the 1990s will remember Cannondales oversized aluminium CAAD (Cannondale Advanced Aluminium Design) bikes winning races well before carbon rolled into town. I once put sub 1000g tubular wheels on a pretty normal SuperSix Evo and it was under 12lb. And the sacrifice to performance out on the road is not as noticeable as you might think. It means aluminum foil which represents the durability of this bike. My Allez Sprint with Ultegra Di2 hydraulic, SWorks PowerCranks, everything else Enve carbon and 29c tires came in at 17 lbs with water bottle cages, pedals, sealant, etc. build finished, ultegra di2 & roval cl40s on a specialized allez sprint disc (sagan edition), Awesome, Im really keen to pick up an Allez frameset when theyre re-released next year to replace my CAAD12. Affinitys most affordable Level 1 complete build will sell for $3,500 with a SRAM Force 1x or 2x mechanical groupset, Thomson components & DT Swiss wheels ($1,500 extra to add the lighter Affinity SL-AF carbon wheels). While there are certainly faster options in the skinsuit category, it is still going to save you 3-5w at race speeds over a tight fitting, race fit kit. If you have a baggy jersey it could be 10-20w..
