The new from-the-ground-up Rail damper combines low maintenance with intuitive ease of use and impressive on-trail performance. The geometry remains unchanged for the 2022 model. Internal cable routing. Shimano Deore M6100 Adding this extra squish to the rear end is possible thanks to a new, two-part linkage designed for the updated Occam. Orbeas system, dubbed Concentric Boost 2, among other things, is claimed to decouple braking and suspension forces, making the rear suspension active under braking. Two is better than one. On one hand, its a 150mm-travel Trail bike a class of bike that youd normally expect to climb reasonably well, but maybe not be super sprightly about it. Put differently, the Trail Pistol feels like a better option for a fairly aggressive rider who wants a shorter-travel, more efficient bike and is willing to do a bit more work to soak up bumps themselves, in exchange for more stable, calmer handling. Especially given the high degree of customization available from the MyO program, there should be something for most people in there. With confidence like this you can race more and scout less with the Rekon. The top-of-fork simple sweep adjuster from firm to open can lock out the fork or fully open the system with plenty of positions in between. But I think thats a totally reasonable tradeoff given the intentions of the Occam line once again, its not a mini Enduro bike, but really meant to be a true Trail option. Twenty years later, that same DNA lives on in the new Marzocchi Z2; its ready to shred with smooth and plush suspension. Orbea has also made space for a OneUp EDC-style multitool that lives inside the main pivot axle and is held in place with magnets. Have you ridden the new rallon? Pure Trail geometry. The Smash is. As with on the way up, the Occam LT feels lively and quick-handling, while still having good suspension performance, and a bit cushier, more forgiving ride than most bikes with similar handling characteristics. In keeping with that, the suspension performance of the Occam LT feels slightly firmer and more supportive but a little less cushy and planted than a lot of bikes with similar travel, but that feels nicely in keeping with the other facets of its performance. For a 150mm-travel bike, the Occam LT is also great at pumping and building speed that way the slightly firmer than average suspension performance and probably also the more moderate wheelbase really go a long way there. If you want the full custom experience, the M1 and M-LTD builds are available via the MyO program, which lets you personalise everything from components to the paint job. All the pieces come together for one heck of a great ride. Orbea offers lots of component swaps, youll see these listed initalics, these may influence the overall price. Thats a super compelling recipe for a lot of riders who want a bike that doesnt take a ton of speed or super burly terrain to come alive, but would appreciate a little more suspension travel than the generally shorter-travel options that would typically fit that bill. This versatile tire can be used as a front, a pair, or as a rear depending on trail conditions. feels like it could be a good comparison and id be intersted in hearing your thoughts! Expert staff, service, events, galleries, demos & more! The 4060 LT also wants a pretty forward stance and aggressive weighting of the front wheel to work best, and while I think the steeper headtube angle (and consequently shorter front-center) on the ST version will mitigate that somewhat, I still think the 4060 ST will favor a slightly more forward stance than the Occam LT. Fork Adjustments The all new Deore 12 speed components deliver accurate shifting, efficiency, and chain management that's been unheard-of in a budget group. The Orbea Occam is one hell of a bike. All of this will be back for 2022, because the geometry has not changed one millimetre. It pedals great and still also offers up a ton of traction, without requiring a lot of care to manage weight distribution and balance, and is quick enough handling to get through tighter spots easily without feeling twitchy or unstable. Maxxis Dissector Front Tire Orbeas Occam trail bike gets new linkage and rowdier for 2022. Its fairly bare-bones (just 2, 3, 4, and 5 mm Allen wrenches) but thats enough for a lot of basic adjustments, and its neatly stored inside the rocker pivot axle, with a secure magnetic attachment. There will be plenty of critics who say these figures look conservative for a modern trail bike, for example, the 2021 Specialized Stumpjumper Evo which also has 150mm of rear-wheel travel is running more progressive geometry. Were a bit disappointed that Orbea hasnt trickled the Lockr box in frame storage from the new Rallon down to the Occam. We think the strut on the right side of the frame looks fantastic and it makes for a super-stiff chassis, but the bottle cage bolts are still right next door, and your drinks will continue to rattle against the frame into 2022. Orbea took inspiration from the form and function of its successful Rallon to create the balance of stiffness, durability and low weight in the new Occam. Hydro High Polished Triple Butted Aluminum Frame. The Occam is only available with air shocks, but Orbea offers both air and coil options on the Occam LT. Cable routing is internal across the board, theres ample rubber protection on the chainstay and downtube, and a small integrated upper chainguide is included, in lieu of full ISCG tabs. We are hoping to get a bike in the UK for a full review as soon as possible. There are a whole lot of bikes from years gone by that are a lot quicker handling than their modern counterparts, but also frankly pretty terrible by our current standards. The Occam LT pedals better, is sharper handling and more agile, and is more lively and energetic when pumping through and popping off of stuff. They certainly had a point the mountain bike geometry revolution was well underway, and as bikes got longer, lower, and slacker, their stability and capability in big terrain absolutely did improve. The SCOR 4060 LT is a pretty quick-handling, easy-going Enduro bike, but its significantly different from the Occam LT. Thanks! Twenty years later, that same DNA lives on in the new Marzocchi Z2; its ready to shred with smooth and plush suspension. Not that long ago mountain bikes were simple suspension opened up more terrain and, more importantly, it meant more fun. Orbea completely overhauled its Occam trail bike for 2020, using a brand new asymmetric frame design built around 29in wheels and 140mm of travel. Orbea decided to make this change to the Occam after seeing how people were riding the bike in the real world. The Occam hasnt gotten a geometry refresh in this update cycle, and while that might seem odd amid other bike releases these days, its not like it was looking long in the tooth before today. Similar story to the Ripley. How do you think these would compare? He claimed that he was faster on every single one of his training loops on the Occam than his short-legged xc whip. The last Occam was launched for the 2020 model year. The Occam LT pedals a lot better, is more poppy and lively, and a bit quicker handling. With the new Occam, Orbea maintained the trail bike personality so many riders love, but also chucked a Carolina Reaper or two into the pot for a bit of extra spice, with the Occam LT. We expect trail bikes to competently fill the gap between XC race bikes and enduro bikes. This update is a bit more subdued than the all-new frame that the Rallon got, but theres still some interesting stuff going on here as well first and foremost that its actually been split into two separate models, the Occam and the Occam LT. Ive spent the past several months riding the new Occam LT, and it brings something pretty different to the table compared to many modern long-travel Trail bikes. I remember one or two seasons when Evan Plews was destroying the field in PNW endurance racing on one. You've been subscribed to our newsletter. Marzocchi Bomber Z2 and Shimano drivetrain components. Love data? Orbeas Occam trail bike has a mid-life refresh for 2022 that sees the range get two rear suspension travel options. What is new is that the Occam line has been split into two separate models, the Occam and the Occam LT. As you probably guessed, LT stands for Long Travel, and the Occam LT adds 10 mm of wheel travel to each end, by use of a different fork and shock. Thats pretty bang-on for a modern Trail bike, and while there are definitely competitors out there with a more slack headtube angle, given what Orbea is saying about the Occam and Occam LT not being mini-Enduro sleds, keeping things a little steeper and more nimble makes good sense. The Occam LT is a bit easier going and more forgiving if youre not trying to charge super hard, and is the better technical climber of the two. Already have an account with us? If Id hopped on it blind and started pedaling, Id have guessed that it had significantly less suspension travel. The new 150mm Occam LT is for when the 160mm Rallon is too much, and the regular 140mm Occam isn't enough. And while I think theyre generally right, I really wasnt tempted to size up. Just digging in, but first, REJOICE the bottle is accessible with the left hand! Same story as the Bronson, to an even greater degree. This past year, Orbea launched not only their overhauled Rallon Enduro bike, but also gave their Occam Trail bike a refresh, too. Shock Adjustments This product is available for purchase in select store locations or by phone. Riding those famous tracks day in, day out for eight years, he broke more bikes than he can remember. Since the front triangle carries over from the prior model, the Occam doesnt get the Lockr downtube storage compartment that was just added to the Rallon, and the geometry hasnt changed, either. On the other, Orbea talks a lot about the Occam LT being efficient and agile, and if the Occam LT isnt trying to be a super game-on charger first and foremost, maybe that opens up some room for it to climb better than a lot of bikes with similar suspension travel? A lot of brands are making big claims about how hard their shorter-travel bikes can charge, but Orbea is refreshingly straightforward in saying that the Occam LT is NOT a mini Rallon. Theyre clearly targeting both versions of the Occam to be true Trail bikes, meant for long days in the saddle with an emphasis on efficiency. The Occam LT shares the standard bikes geometry numbers, except for the head angle thats now 65.5 degrees and seat-tube angle which sits at 76.5 degrees both slacker because of the longer travel fork and the bottom bracket drop (how far beneath the axles the bottom bracket is) sits at 32mm rather than 35mm for the standard Occam. Orbea has over-shocked the Occam LT by adding 10mm of travel to both ends, using a 150mm Fox 36 on the front, and either a Float X air shock or DHX coil on the rear. The answer to that question is a resounding yes. The Occam LT pedals extremely well for a 150mm-travel Trail bike. Love bikes? Set up for aggressive trail riding, this bike scores top marks on the one metric that really counts: smiles per second. That should make for a bike thats even quicker under power and more sprightly feeling than the Occam LT that Ive been testing, but also make it less cushy and forgiving on the way back down. But I also think that the combination of steep-ish 65.5 headtube and 76.5 seat tube angles, plus moderately long 440 mm chainstays deserves a lot of the credit. He started racing downhill at the tender age of 11 before going on to compete across Europe.
