I should never have waited so long to try it! It is a nic e slow burning smoke and my first experience with cakes. Update 01/19/06- One thing that wasn't put in my original review is that Pirate Kake is a wonderful DGT tobacco, in fact sometimes I think I prefer to smoke it after a few hours left in the pipe. Just the way I like it! Fantastic smoke. The pipe gods had spoken. Some time later I thought to break it up and mix some in with some other tobacco as I packed my pipe. Such a concentration of LAtakia becomes unidimensional after a while, so it would gain to be mixed with something else to bring variety to it. Some would say the latakia is over dominant so much that you can not taste the other tobaccos in this blend. Once the pipe is lit, the flavor is very rich and its sweetness catches my attention, since despite having a smaller amount of virginia, it is sweeter than other English of its kind and this is something that I like in virginia/ latakia. On the other hand if you like heavy Latakia blends then this may be for you. update July 2014** I decided to change the blend type of this tobacco to other primarily because I don't believe it is an English blend due to its high amount of Latakia. It is a perfect smoke to end the day's demands or to stir up a boring afternoon. But this still is a good and rough almost pure Latakia island for Pirates! Nice and flavorful smoke! The bottom half of the bowl, not surprising, is much more productive. Latakia itself doesn't carry much strength so if you're looking for a nicotine wallop then you won't find it here. I smoked a 1oz sample of this in my nicest pipe, a Jirsa bulldog. As I break it apart the aromas of latakia fill the room and cover my fingers. I love how C & D presses the mixture into bite-sized chunks almost good enough to eat. The tin aroma is that of hay in a barn. I was also surprised at the fact that I got a little bit of complexity out of this blend. The little black clump of tobacco you get in the tin is relatively easy to work with, but that's small redemption for the Latakia overload that follows a crumble, a load, and a light. Performance: A very cool burning blend. Of coarse still a Latakia powerhouse yet smoother on the palate as it gains age. Flavorful.
